Title: Child's Play
Medium: interactive fiction
Genre: slice of life

Child's Play is a 2006 work of interactive fiction by Stephen Granade. It is a comedic twist on the Battle of Wits genre, where instead of a brilliant criminal or a political strategist, the player is put in control of a baby during an arranged playdate. Their archnemesis, rather than a legendary detective or a powerful businessman, is a little red-haired girl trying to get her hands on the player character's favorite toy. The player is forced to find ways to overcome the protagonist's limitations - such as diminute size and lack of communication abilities - by manipulating the behavior of adults and other babies around them. In other words, "what if Rugrats was a Battle of Wits?"

Characters

  • Kiddo (Lead Mastermind): The player character, in whose house the playdate occurs. They hold a lot of resentment against Zoe for always trying to steal their favorite toy.
  • Watson Mason (Specialist): A quiet boy who is always looking sad. He is the only one who is accompanied by his father instead of his mother.

Related titles

  • Varicella is a previous work of interactive fiction where the puzzles are likewise based on manipulating the behavior of NPCs. In this case, however, it takes place in the much more high-stakes setting of political intrigue and assassination within a royal court.
