Context

The protagonist, a Grifter, has arrived in the city of Teron looking for marks. They run into Petras, an old colleague, and the two witness a wealthy merchant called Gracius check in at the inn and call for the services of a loremaster.

Summary

Petras gives the protagonist loremaster clothes and suggests that they impersonate one to approach Gracius. If the protagonist asks for advice on impersonating a loremaster, Petras suggests that they play up their pretentiousness, acting superior and dismissive and throwing in obscure names and references. The protagonist approaches Gracius in disguise pretending to be the loremaster he requested, finding out that he wants a map appraised so he can use it as a gift for Lord Antidas. After convincing Gracius that the map is worthless and that Lord Antidas would be offended to receive it as a gift, the protagonist invents a story that Lord Antidas has been wishing for a map of the Empire etched in silver. They convince Gracius to give them the map and pay them to turn it into a gift that would please the Lord, thus successfully conning Gracius of both the map and his money.
