La Casa de Papel (known in English as Money Heist) is a Spanish television series created by Álex Pina. The plot centers on a team of robbers put together by a mysterious man who calls himself "Professor" to conduct a meticulously-planned heist on the Royal Mint of Spain. Each using the name of a city as an alias, they enter the Royal Mint wearing red jumpsuits and Salvador Dalí masks, take the people inside the building as hostages, and shut themselves in with the goal of printing 2.4 billion euros and escaping with the money.

The La Casa de Papel series consists of the following parts:

  • La Casa de Papel part 1, episodes 1-13 (2017)
  • La Casa de Papel part 2, episodes 1-9 (2017)
  • La Casa de Papel part 3, episodes 1-8 (2019)
  • La Casa de Papel part 4, episodes 1-8 (2020)
  • La Casa de Papel part 5, episodes 1-10 (2021)

Parts 1 and 2 were originally aired as 16 episodes on Spanish network Antena 3 in 2017, but were later re-cut into 22 episodes for international distribution by Netflix. After gaining worldwide popularity, the series was renewed for parts 3 and 4, and later part 5.

  • Tokyo (Commoner; Apprentice): The narrator of the show. A hot-headed and impulsive bank robber who has been on the run since a failed robbery killed her boyfriend and two policemen.
  • Professor (Lead Mastermind): An enigmatic man with a mysterious past who carefully planned the Royal Mint heist. He works from outside the Mint to direct the robbers and handle interactions with the police.
  • Berlin (Specialist): A professional robber responsible for managing the team and controlling the hostages inside the Mint.
  • Nairobi (Specialist): A counterfeiter who sees her craft as an art. She is responsible for managing the printing of the money inside the Mint.
  • Rio (Specialist): A young and irresponsible computer expert, and Tokyo's love interest.
  • Denver (Commoner): Moscow's son, a small-time thug with a short fuse who serves as muscle during the heist.
  • Helsinki and Oslo (Commoners): Two Serbs joined at the hip who rarely speak, working as soldiers directly under Berlin to keep the hostages under control.

Related titles

  • Inside Man is an earlier film that might have served as inspiration for the show. It also centers on a carefully-orchestrated bank heist with some similar elements to the one in La Casa de Papel.
  • The Sting, a classic con film, is another likely inspiration. In a nod to the film, one of the episodes has the Professor play the song "The Entertainer", popularized by its soundtrack, on the piano.
