Series information

Ten is a manga series by Nobuyuki Fukumoto. One of Fukumoto's several mahjong manga, it was serialized in 164 chapters in the magazine Kindai Mahjong Gold from 1989 to 2002 and collected into 18 volumes. It ultimately became more well-known for spinning off Akagi, arguably Fukumoto's most famous manga.
The story begins with a chance encounter between Hiroyuki, a young mahjong player who focuses on logic, and Ten, a rep player who specializes in cheating. The meeting between these two players with such different approaches and personalities inevitably comes to drag both of them further into the mahjong underworld.
As one of Fukumoto's earlier manga, Ten's first few chapters start off as a more comedic and light-hearted slice-of-life story before settling into the intense strategical matches that he came to be known for. Even after this shift in tone, Ten is somewhat more grounded than his other manga like Akagi or Kaiji, with a greater focus on mahjong strategy than insane life-or-death gambles.
Characters
- Takashi Ten (Lead Mastermind): A man who plays for the local mahjong parlors and cheats blatantly to win. Although at first he seems unable to take life or mahjong seriously, Hiroyuki slowly learns that he has hidden depths.
- Hiroyuki Igawa (Specialist; Apprentice): A young and confident mahjong player who relies on observation and logic to win. When he meets Ten, he is thrown off by the man's carefree attitude and his reliance on cheating.
