The Sting is a classic 1973 American con film directed by George Roy Hill and written by David S. Ward. Probably the most iconic film of the genre, it stars Paul Newman and Robert Redford as a pair of con men in the 1930s trying to pull off a big con against a dangerous crime boss.
Characters
- Johnny Hooker (Specialist; Apprentice): A grifter whose latest con accidentally puts him on the crosshairs of vicious mobster Doyle Lonnegan.
- Henry Gondorff (Lead Mastermind): A master of the big con, now retired and laying low to hide from the feds. Hooker goes after him for help in pull one over on Lonnegan.
- Luther Coleman (Specialist): Hooker's mentor and accomplice, who sends him to Gondorff so he can learn the art of the big con.
- Doyle Lonnegan (Specialist): A crime boss intent on getting back at Hooker after the latter stole Lonnegan's money by conning one of his couriers.

- Leverage is a television show that draws heavy inspiration from the heist and con genres, directly paying homage to The Sting in the episode "The Bottle Job" (S2E11), which has the main characters pulling similar cons to the film on a character inspired by Doyle Lonnegan.
- La Casa de Papel, another television show heavily inspired by heist films, also makes a reference to The Sting in one episode where a character plays "The Entertainer", popularized by the film's soundtrack, on the piano.
