Tobaku Haouden Zero ("Gambling Emperor Legend Zero") is a manga series by Nobuyuki Fukumoto. It centers on the title character Zero Ukai, a brilliant and kind-hearted youth who is invited to enter the Dream Kingdom, a sort of gambling amusement park hosting a competition to choose the rep player for the wealthiest man in Japan.

Series

The Tobaku Haouden Zero series consists of two parts:

  • Tobaku Haouden Zero, chapters 1-70 (2007-2009)
  • Tobaku Haouden Zero: Gyanki-hen, chapters 1-88 (2011-2013)

Both parts were originally serialized in Weekly Shounen Magazine, and later collected into 8 and 10 volumes, respectively.

Characters

  • Zero Ukai (Lead Mastermind): An idealistic but extremely intelligent 17-year-old who formed a band of Robin Hoods to recover the money stolen from the victims of a bank transfer scam. He joins the Dream Kingdom competition with the idea of using the prize money for a good cause.
  • Mitsuru, Yuuki and Hiroshi (Commoners): Zero's Robin Hood comrades, recruited from a suicide website.
  • Muryou Zaizen (Specialist): A greedy and selfish old billionaire who owns the Zaizen Group. He organizes the Dream Kingdom competition with the goal of choosing the "gambling king" who will be his representative in an upcoming high-stakes gambling event.

  • Other Battles of Wits manga by Nobuyuki Fukumoto involving gambling include Akagi, Gin to Kin, Kaiji and Ten. Of these, Kaiji is probably the most similar, as it also tends to center on original games with custom rules, most of which are organized by a shady corporation owned by a cruel and insane billionaire.
