The Auto-Response Trick is a Trick in the adventure video game Grim Fandango. It is played by Manny Calavera on Evaluna in Year 1 of the game.
Context
Manny's boss Don Copal has sent a memo to all agents in the Department of Death calling them to a mass poisoning incident. Clients will be collected in a first-come-first-served basis, and since Manny has not had a good client in a long time, it's in his best interest to get there early. However, Manny's rival Domino has given Manny's driver the rest of the day off so Manny won't be able to get to the poisoning on time. Manny was able to convince Glottis, the Department of Death's demon mechanic, to be his driver, but first he needs a work order signed so Glottis can modify one of the cars to fit his massive frame. Manny needs to get his boss to sign the work order, but he can't get past Evaluna, his secretary. When she tries to call Don Copal to ask him for the signature, he only says that he doesn't want to be interrupted today.
Summary
Manny goes outside the DoD building and finds a rope of neckties leading out of Don Copal's office. He climbs the rope to find that Copal has sneaked out and set up his computer to auto-reply to calls with one of several pre-recorded voice messages. Looking through the recorded messages, Manny finds one that says "Ah, cripes, Eva! Just sign it yourself, will ya? I’m busy!", and sets that as the auto-response. When he goes back to Evaluna and asks her to try calling Copal again, she hears the message and signs the work order for him.
