Trick information
Series: Ace Attorney

When: Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, Case 1

The Chip Count Trick is a Trick in the Ace Attorney video game series.

Context

Phoenix Wright has been put on trial for the murder of a man named Shadi Smith, defended by Apollo Justice and Kristoph Gavin. The witness, Olga Orly, has claimed that Phoenix murdered the victim after losing in a game of poker. In her testimony, Olga explained that the house uses two sizes of poker chip, small and large, and that each player started the game with 3500 points in chips. A photo of the poker table after the last hand, submitted as evidence, confirms that the victim had more chips than Phoenix at the end of the game.

The Trick

Apollo presses the witness on her testimony about the chip values, getting her confirmation that the chips shown in the picture are all the chips used in the game. He then asks her how much the chips are worth, getting the answer that one kind is worth 100 points and the other 1000 points. Gavin suggests adding this claim to her testimony.

Apollo and Gavin then realize that, if what she claims about the starting points is correct, then the number of chips in the picture seems to not add up. If the small chips are worth 100 points and the large chips are worth 1000 points, then the total in play would be 10600 points. They realize that the only way for the chips to add up is if the values are the other way around: the small chips are worth 1000 points, and the large ones 100 points. With this, they are able to conclude, by totaling up the chips in the picture, that Phoenix was actually winning, which removes his motive for the murder.
