The Sprout Conception Trick is a Trick in the Hellblazer comic book series, taking place in Hellblazer #9-10 as part of the War for the Prophecy.

Context

A prophecy engraved in a stone in Hell has been unearthed, predicting that at the winter solstice a child would be born from a conjunction between nature and supernature, and this child would be a healing force in the human realm. A fundamentalist Christian group called the Resurrection Crusade intended to use this prophecy to bring about the Second Coming and institute the Kingdom of God on Earth, but Constantine foiled their plans. However, breaking the prophecy leaves humanity vulnerable to the influence of Hell, giving the demon Nergal and his Damnation Army the upper hand.

At the same time, the elemental realm is in disarray, as Swamp Thing is trying to retire from his position as protector of the Green to live in marital bliss with his wife Abby. To do this, he needs to find a host for the Sprout, a new plant elemental that will take over his duties. However, no suitable candidate has been found yet.

Summary

Constantine comes up with a plan to fulfill the prophecy through a neutral force, and at the same time solve Swamp Thing's predicament. He will allow Swamp Thing to temporarily take over his body in order to conceive a child with Abby, so that the Sprout can be incarnated as this child. This will also fulfill the requirements of the prophecy. To hide the knowledge of his demon blood from Swamp Thing while he is in control of his body, Constantine uses a memory sigil. Unknowingly to him, however, Swamp Thing has the same idea that he had, and doesn't wait for Constantine to explain before taking over his body by force. Nevertheless, the child is conceived and the prophecy is fulfilled, throwing a wrench in Nergal's plans.
